What if we created a better balance between the treatment of disease and a science that helps us optimize health based on human needs, goals and wants? Our delivery teams and their strategies would be different because the outcomes will focus on want we want; more health for everyone! This is the future of Salutogenic Science (Salute: health, Genesis: The origins of) and we are beginning to find financial ways to sustain it so this simply becomes, “good medicine.”

Dr. Dave Rakel is chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Wisconsin. As a faculty member at UW–Madison, he founded the Integrative Medicine Program, received the Humanism in Medicine Award, and his team worked with more than 50 clinical systems within the Veterans Health Administration to make care more personalized, proactive, and patient driven. He has published 11 books, including Compassionate Connection, the Textbook of Family Medicine, Current Therapy, and Integrative Medicine, as well as peer-reviewed research on the impact of measures such as mindfulness meditation and the power of the therapeutic encounter.
